Meghalaya Assembly ready to pass ILP resolution
SHILLONG: The State Legislative Assembly is all set to table and pass an official resolution to urge the Centre for implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in Meghalaya during the special session to be held on Thursday.
The resolution was approved by the Cabinet on Tuesday.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma had expressed confidence that the government will be able to pass the resolution.
The government in a meeting with the stakeholders had also assured to aggressively push the Centre to immediately implement ILP in the state following the passage of the amended Citizenship Act.
The proposed resolution also got the support of the opposition Congress. “We have decided to attend the special session to demand the implementation of ILP in the state,” Congress leader and Mawsynram MLA Himalaya Shangpliang said while speaking at a public meeting held here.
Shangpliang also said that the party would also demand the effective implementation of the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act passed by the then Congress-led state government in 2016.
“Besides, we would also demand the need to bring in more protective laws to safeguard the interest of the indigenous communities,” he said.
The decision to table the resolution also came in the wake of protesters across Meghalaya demanding implementation of the ILP after the Centre announced extension of the same in Manipur recently.
Meanwhile, the four pressure groups have also decided to gather near the Assembly building to wait for the outcome of the session.
These include the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP), Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF) and Ri Bhoi Youth Federation (RBYF).
