Meghalaya Cabinet approves revised minimum wages, increase benefits to over 85000 construction labourers
The state Cabinet on Friday approved the revised minimum wages and enhanced cess collection to benefit over 85000 labourers in Meghalaya.
Terming its as a very important decision of the government, chief minister Conrad K Sangma said that the minimum wages for labourers falling under the highly skilled category will not get Rs 645 from Rs 586, skilled at Rs 605 from Rs 530, semi-skilled at Rs 565 from Rs 474 and unskilled at Rs 525 from Rs 419.
He said all organizations have to implement the revised rate failing which, people are urged to submit their complaints to the labour department for necessary actions.
Further, the chief minister also informed that the cabinet has approved the amendment of the The Meghalaya Buildings and Other Construction Workers Regulation and Employment Condition Rules, 2008.
“You are aware that we are having a cess being collected and this amount is then being used for the benefit of the labourers, who are registered with the government. About 80,000 or 85,000 of them are registered. There are different benefits like you get benefits for medical payments, other disabilities and you get payments for education of children studying in schools and colleges – so we have enhanced those benefits and so with that amendment, the amounts that are going to go to the families and the registered labourers, they will get higher benefits now.
The cabinet has decided to increase the benefits for the labourers who are registered under this particular rule,” he said.
