Meghalaya Cabinet okays ordinance to allow operationalisation of the first private medical college
The state Cabinet on Wednesday passed the Meghalaya Private Medical Institution (Regulation of Admission, Fixation of Fees and Reservation) Ordinance, 2024 and Meghalaya Medical College Regulation and Admission into MBBS course, 2024.
“Cabinet has cleared the ordinance and will meet again to constitute the Regulatory Body,” Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh told reporters after a meeting chaired by chief minister Conrad K Sangma at Resubelpara, North Garo Hills District.
She informed that the ordinance will come into effect post signing by the Governor of Meghalaya.
“The regulatory committee will be notified and accordingly fixation of fees, implementation of reservation policy and allotment of seats as per the norms of the government and guided by ruling of various Courts will be effective,” Lyngdoh said.
Asked, the minister said that USTM’s PA Sangma International Medical College will be operationalized soon after the signing of the ordinance by the Governor.
“We now have approved it and the USTM will be allowed to operate soon after the ordinance is signed by the governor and duly notified,” she added.
Further, the minister also stated that the regulating committee will then sit to guide this private medical college on matters of fixation of fees, application and implementation of reservation and allotment/allocation of seats.
On the status of the much awaited Shillong and Tura medical colleges, Lyngdoh said, “We have our own timelines and we are progressing positively. We will meet our target of operationalizing the government college (in Shillong) hopefully from session 2025-26. The status of Tura Medical College is very good and we hope to be able to meet the target of making it operationalize in the session of 2026-27.”
“From time to time, we will update the people of the state on the progress of these two other projects and we are confident that we are meeting these deadlines,” she assured.
