Meghalaya celebrates World Red Cross Day
The Meghalaya Branch of the Indian Red Cross Society celebrated World Red Cross Day at Raj Bhavan, Shillong on May 8 in commemoration of the birth anniversary of Henry Dunant, the founder of the Red Cross Movement.
Governor Phagu Chauhan, also the President of the Meghalaya Branch, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest, joined by MLA Shanbor Shullai, Principal Secretary Harish Chandra Choudhary, Red Cross Society Shillong President RO Wahlang, government officials, Red Cross members, and invitees.
During the event, the Governor reflected on the founding principles of the Red Cross Society and commended the steadfast support and dedication of its Life Members in fulfilling the organization’s objectives. He praised their generosity in providing aid and relief to those in need, both locally and globally and expressed gratitude to the students for their commitment to education and shaping the future.
Under the theme ‘Keeping Humanity Alive,’ the Governor urged members to embrace compassion, fairness, and empathy in all their endeavours, emphasizing the importance of preserving human dignity.
RO Wahlang, Chairman of the Meghalaya Branch, highlighted the heroic acts of Red Cross volunteers worldwide and called for more individuals to join the movement. The ceremony also saw the release of the World Red Cross Flag by the Governor and the presentation of Life Membership Certificates to new members of the Meghalaya Red Cross Society, with a total of 61 certificates distributed.
The World Red Cross Day Pledge was administered, and the celebratory atmosphere was further enhanced by songs, dances, and skits performed by students from various schools.
