Meghalaya: Cement cos fail to pay new rate of transportation, Transporter go on indefinite strike
Furious over non-committal attitude of the cement companies in East Jaiñtia Hills District, the local transporters under the banner of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) comprising the Jaintia Hills Truck Owners’ and Driver Association (JHTOA), Meghalaya Truckers’ Union (MTU) and the All Jaintia Cement and Clinker Transports Association (AJCCTA) decided to go indefinite strike from Monday.
No transporters will accept any goods for delivery until their demands are resolved
The strike is the fallout of the meeting between the Jaintia Hills Cement Manufacturer Association (JHCMA) and representatives of JAC to pay the new rate of transportation.
Nidamon Chulet, president of JHTOA “We had a meeting on Monday with representative of cement companies, but they turned down our demand and we decided to go for indefinite strike until we meet our demand.”
“We will not resume operations until our demands is accepted by the cement companies,” said Nidamon. He urged the government of Meghalaya to look into the matter to implement the new rate of transportation.
JHCMA, president PK Pareek said “We need to examine the legalities of the said notification and requested the transporters to bear with us till June 30.”
Earlier the JAC Committee have convened a meeting in Jowai to discuss on the non-implementation of new rate of transportation by the cement factories, but representatives of cements prefer not to attend the meeting.
The Government of Meghalaya on January 13, last announced that new rate of transportation for heavy and medium goods vehicles is Rs.9/- per MT per KM for Black Topped road, in gravelled road Rs.10/- per MT per KM and Rs.12/- per MT per KM for Kutcha Road.

The price rise of fuel and other factors including government rules compliance is so just for the Truckers to take such action. I think our Government should look into this matter thoroughly and take a wise decision in order to strengthen the local people itself.
