Meghalaya CM asks opp to refrain from politicizing COVID-19 pandemic
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Monday asked the opposition Congress to refrain from making COVID-19 situation a political issue.
“We should avoid any kind of politics from this kind of a situation and there need not be any political statements made in this regard,” Sangma said while reacting to the allegation made by the Congress that the government has failed to handle the COVID-19 situation in the state.
Stating that his government has been very transparent, the chief minister said that the government is always open to suggestions to ensure the overall system is improved.
“If the opposition has any constructive suggestions to make please write to me and please let me know and we will take it positively,” he said.
Sangma also reminded that the battle against COVID-19 pandemic is not just the governmet or the opposition but the society as a whole and said, “We all have to fight this battle together.”
Asked, the chief minister however said in the three meetings chaired by the Assembly Speaker, members of the Congress, who were present, have expressed satisfaction on how things have taken place.
“Of course it’s a complicated situation, nothing can be perfect but the steps taken by the government from day one has been appreciated time and again by the opposition MLAs also. I don’t know why the statements have come out at a later stage as there was ample opportunity in the meeting to say it but in the meeting they said something else and outside somebody said something else. I have no comment on what they have to say outside (the meeting) but in the meeting under the chairmanship of the Speaker, the opposition has positive response and they had also made positive suggestions,” he said.
