Meghalaya CM to inspect damaged portion of NH-6
Concerned over the grave damage to the National Highway 6 along East Jaintia Hills District due to incessant rainfalls, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has decided to personally visit East Jaintia Hills District on Sunday to inspect the damaged portion of the Highway for initiate immediate necessary intervention as to alleviate the inconvenience of the commuters.
East Jaintia Hills District was cut off from Lower Assam, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura following major caving of the road near Lumshnong on National Highway 6 due to erosion of soils beneath the road caused by overflooding of water.
The National Highway 6 have developed cracked under Umkiang, Kuliang and Ratacherra which may put lives of travellers in danger.
Though the weather improved, heavy vehicles are not allowed to ply through the affected stretch of the NH-6 and the road restoration work has begun under the NHAI.
The prohibition order for movement on NH-6 for all vehicles and pedestrians on the damaged road at Lumshnong will continue in view the safety of the commuters.
Light Motor Vehicles (less than 3 tons) are allowed to ply via the alternate route of Brichyrnot-Lumshnong (Star Cement) road. However it may be noted that the said alternate road is not in very good condition. Commuters are cautioned to travel through the said road only if absolutely necessary.
Vehicles carrying essential commodities to other states through the National Highway 06 will have to exchange the goods to LMVs and the exact time will be made know at a later stage by the district administration.
On Thursday, Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui had conducted an inspection at Lumshnong and held a review meeting with the district administration to ensure immediate restoration of the road. Also present in the meeting was Sutnga-Saipung MLA Shitlang Pale.
Meanwhile on Saturday Lahkmen Rymbui inspected the Chyrmang-Iongnoh road which cutoff due to heavy rain on Sunday last.
He was accompanied by DC ,SP, SE PWD (Roads) and other officials and stress on how to prevent landslides and restore the road conditions
