Meghalaya CM urges Centre to come up with amicable solutions to NEHU issue
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has urged the Centre to come up with an amicable solution to bring back normalcy in the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU).
Sangma said he had briefed the union education minister and urged him to find a solution to end the current impasse.
“Briefed the Hon’ble Minister Education @dpradhanbjp ji on the ongoing situation in NEHU and urged him to find an amicable solution to this issue,” the CM said.
Miscreants vandalized the official residence and vehicle of the NEHU VC Prof PS Shukla on Saturday night after he had made an earnest appeal to the agitating students to call off their ongoing agitation and engage in open dialogue.
However, the agitating students of the NEHU have outrightly rejected the invitation of the Vice Chancellor Prof PS Shukla for talks and maintained that they will be ready to come to the negotiating table only after his stepping down as the head of the institution.
The university has been put under total lockdown following the ongoing indefinite hunger strike led by the North Eastern Hill University Students’ Union (NEHUSU) and backed by the Khasi Students Union (KSU – NEHU Unit) demanding the resignation of the VC and termination of the Registrar and Deputy Registrar, whose appointments according to them were “illegal”.
More and more students were hospitalized as the hunger protest completed 90 hours.
In a statement, Prof Shukla had reiterated his willingness to address all concerns raised by students, stating that he remains deeply committed to the well-being of NEHU’s students and the advancement of the institution.
