Meghalaya Congress set to corner MDA govt in Assembly over law and order, other issues
The opposition Congress is all set to corner the NPP-led state government on the prevailing law and order situation in the state during the upcoming autumn session of the state Assembly, which will commence from September 10.
Addressing media persons after a CLP meeting held on Wednesday, Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma said the prevailing sense of insecurity amongst the people across the state will be one of the issues to be raised by the opposition.
“The sense of insecurity keeping in mind the resurgence and reemergence of various militant activities and insurgent activities across the state against the backdrop of palpable feeling of frustration, loss of hope and anger amongst the people particularly the youth against the backdrop of lack of opportunities,” he said.
Stating that this is one of the crucial issues confronting the people of the state, Mukul said, “…when we talk to the people we know how frustrated and angry the people are and about lack of opportunities having been created by the government in the last preceding three years even the opportunities that have been created have somehow being snatched away by other people – those are things which we will dwell when we present it before the august house.”
The former Chief Minister also informed that the opposition would also hammer the government on the issue related to the sense of insecurity amongst the people who are residing along the inter-state border.
“We are deeply disturbed by this development…I must say the failure to reinstill the sense of security amongst the people by the government of the day and the failure of the government to response to a given situation where people are subjected to some kind of instances where they are being intruded upon by people from the neighbouring state,” he said.
Alleging that there is complete lawlessness in the state, the Congress leader said that when the government has refused to enforce the law then there is lawlessness.
“You will see lawlessness in the roads, in the national highways, in those roads which leads to the land custom stations, where you have trucks transporting goods without being regulated by the law of the land, resulting in not just damaging to the road but resulting in huge loss to the state’s exchequer, to the nation’s exchequer including instances of road accidents, resulting in loss of precious lives,” he pointed out.
“There is complete lawlessness. Somehow or the other we see and people tell us that what they see today as though people who are required to enforce the provisions of the law have decided to close their eyes and act as blind,” he added.
On the other hand, Mukul said that his party would also highlight the issue of livelihood, the impact of lack of governance on the lives of the farmers, dislocation of numbers of programmes that was initiated which were actually designed to enable farmers to really ensure the farming activities is seen as something remunerative and therefore create multiple options of livelihood including generating entrepreneurship and business.
“These have gone and this is an issue which farmers feel we must take up and people have come and met our colleagues and stressed the need to take up this issue,” he said.
The Leader of Opposition further stated that the whole issue of curtailing people’s way of life, people’s rights, liberty including food habits and creating a situation where people are feeling depressed for not getting what they should get – will also be taken up.
“This has never happened in this country, the whole beauty and charm and diversity of this great nation is not being understood and because of that the resultant decisions by numbers of authorities from across the country inflict upon the rights and liberty of the people including food habits,” he stated.
