Meghalaya: DSEL under heavy security cover after termination of 260 tainted teachers
Adequate security have been deployed at the office of the Directorate of School Education & Literacy (DSEL) in Shillong following the termination of over 260 teachers, who were found to be tainted in the 2009 education job scam.
“We have deployed adequate police personnel from SF-10 and battalion at the DSEL office since yesterday,” East Khasi Hills superintendent of police Sylvester Nongtynger told reporters on Thursday.
The Directorate has issued termination orders to 260 tainted teachers on June 29, in compliance with the High Court order related to the appointment to the post of assistant teachers in government elementary schools.
Subsequent to this, the Director of School Education & Literacy, Ambrose ChM arak had written to the Deputy Commissioner Matsiewdor War Nongbri requesting deployment of adequate security force to ensure that there is no breakdown of law and order in the city.
“I would like to inform you that there is every likelihood of law and order problems in the coming days in the premises of the DSEL, Kennelworth Road, Laitumkhrah. I therefore request you to kindly arrange and provide security at the premises of the DSEL,” Marak stated in his letter to the DC.
Accordingly, the DC has requested the district police chief to take necessary action.
Asked, the SP said, “As of today, the situation is peaceful. However, if required more force will be deputed.”
Nongtynger further maintained that taking out protest of any kind is a violation against protocols to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the state.
It may be mentioned here that a total of 246 tainted teachers were also terminated in 2014.
The education job scam was unearthed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in 2009, when East Shillong MLA Ampareen Lyngdoh was the education minister. In its report, the CBI had pointed out that majority of candidates were appointed in irregular manner by changing their original marks on account of experience, education, qualification in the score sheets by applying white fluid (correction ink).
While the education department had appointed 350 names as successful candidates in the selection process, 255 were those who were recommended by the politicians.
The CBI had also named five cabinet ministers, then Assembly Speaker and six legislators besides other politicians for tampering with the score-sheets of the candidates applying for the post of assistant teachers.
Meanwhile, the CBI had already filed chargesheet against the former education minister and retired education officials JD Sangma and AI Lyngdoh.
Lyngdoh in a recent statement had maintained that she would defend herself in the Court.
“Regarding the CBI filing the chargesheet, I would like to state that as of 12:00 PM July 1st, I have no information about the details of this chargesheet,” the MLA said in a statement.
“I have full faith in our judicial system, and will defend myself before a court of law at an appropriate stage,” she added.

Even in recent years there have been such scams when selecting candidates for RMSA and SSA. Preference were given to relatives and aquaintances of officials in the education department and of those in the oral interview panel although the candidates were not eligible for the position. Very well deserving candidates were rejected without any valid reason.
The DEEO and the panel members conducting the interviews should also be brought under the scanner of the CBI and if found guilty should be punished.
