Meghalaya exporters seeks immediate resumption of international trade with Bangladesh
The Meghalaya International Exporters Chamber of Commerce (MIECC) has sought the intervention of the Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma for immediate resumption of international trade in Khasi and Jaintia Hills region.
In a memorandum submitted to Sangma on Wednesday, the MIECC said, “Requesting you to use your good office by passing an immediate order for resumption of International trade in Khasi and Jaintia Hills between India and Bangladesh.”
The organization of exporters also expressed disappointment on the delay of the government to take decision on the matter despite making multiple requests for resumption of international trade via Dawki and other borders of Khasi and Jaintia Hills.
It said the people of the two districts are facing tremendous hardships after their livelihood activities have been affected to a large extent.
The MIECC further stated that it is a matter of fact that the international trade in Garo Hills has resumed.
“The government has failed to address the problem in our areas. Somehow our friends in the Garo Hills are allowed to resume their economic activities dealing with international trade between India and Bangladesh.
We however fail to understand as to why there are two different laws applied to international trade within the same state, whereas problems are the same in Khasi, Jaintia as well as Garo Hills where people are facing the same insurmountable crisis as livelihood has been affected,” it said.
The MIECC also demanded that if suspension of international trade in Garo Hills can be lifted, the same manner can be made applicable for the districts of Khasi and Jaintia Hills too.
