Meghalaya Governor highlights heroism of Kargil War heroes at Raj Bhavan Event
To mark the 25th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas, the Central Bureau of Communication (CBC), Shillong, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, hosted a silver jubilee program at Raj Bhavan, Shillong. Meghalaya Governor Phagu Chauhan graced the occasion as the chief guest in the presence of GOC, 101 Area, Lieutenant General Sanjay Malik, the Additional Director General of the North Eastern Region (NER) Directorate of NCC, Maj Gen Gagan Deep and other dignitaries.
Addressing the gathering, the Governor emphasized the significance of Kargil Vijay Diwas, underscoring the importance of remembering the sacrifices of the brave soldiers. He expressed his privilege to be part of the Silver Jubilee celebration and highlighted the day as a time to honour the Indian soldiers who sacrificed their lives in defence of their country. He reflected on India’s rich history of brave revolutionaries and freedom fighters whose sacrifices illuminated their era.
Chauhan highlighted the Kargil War and recounted the heroism of Meghalaya’s own Captain Keishing Clifford Nongrum, who was honoured with the Mahavir Chakra for his outstanding sacrifice during the war. He recalled how Captain Nongrum successfully secured a crucial peak, killed several enemy soldiers, and was ultimately martyred in the process. He further praised the bravery of Indian soldiers who have fought and won many battles to protect the country.
During the occasion, the Governor inaugurated a photo exhibition organized by the CBC showcasing the Indian Army and martyrs who laid down their lives for the country. CBC also displayed one short movie on the Kargil War. Prize winners of a competition organized by CBC earlier in the day were also felicitated, followed by the felicitation of the family members of Captain Nongrum by the Hon’ble Governor.
Speaking on the occasion, GOC 101 Area, Lt Gen. Sanjay Malik, highlighted the bravery of the Indian Army and Armed Forces during the war, emphasizing that their courage was crucial to the victory.
Commissioner & Secretary to the Governor, Dr. BDR Tiwari welcomed all the dignitaries in his opening remark and highlighted the different aspects of the Kargil War. The program also featured Art and Music performances by local artists befitting the event.
