Meghalaya govt announces ex-gratia to families of Garo Hills flood victims
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has announced ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh each to the next of kin of the five victims killed in flood-hit areas of Garo Hills region.
Sangma has also assured that the government is taking all steps to ensure safety of the citizens.
“Saddened to see 5 lives lost because of the floods in #GaroHills. Govt has released an ex gratia amount of Rs. 4 Lakhs each to the next of kin of the deceased. We are doing everything to ensure the safety of our citizens during this time. Our condolences to the bereaved families,” the chief minister tweeted.
Earlier, the opposition Congress has slammed the state government for its alleged insensitive attitude towards the flood victims in Garo Hills region.
“We could see the present government is so insensitive as till now no step has been taken to help the people affected by the flood,” Congress spokesman and MLA from Rangsakona Zenith Sangma had said.
He said over a lakh people have been badly hit as the entire plain belt area in West Garo Hills has submerged due to the back flow water of the river Brahmaputra.
“There are a lot of damages to roads and bridges collapsed…there is total disruption of connectivity,” Sangma said.
The Congress MLA had also informed that the Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma had recently visited the plain belt areas and found that many people have become homeless but not a single help has been given to them.
