Meghalaya Govt appoints administrator for winding up of the CMJ University
The state government has appointed an Administrator to implement the winding up of the CMJ University.
A notification issued by the Commissioner & Secretary incharge Education Vijay Kumar Mantri on Thursday said, “In pursuant to the Supreme Court of India judgment dated February 13, 2025 and as per section 48 of the CMJ university Act, 2009, the Govenor of Meghalaya is pleased to appoint D Lyngdoh, Joint Secretary to the Government of Meghalaya, Education Department as Administrator of the CMJ University Meghalaya.
He shall implement the winding up of the University in a manner approved by the State Government.”
On February 14, three senior officials on the instruction of the government visited the campus of CMJ University located in Jorabat to ensure the security of the campus premises.
The visiting team had directed the University to cease all financial transactions, administrative and academic activities and to ensure that no assets are moved from the campus, and that no files, computers, hard disks, or other materials are removed.
The action has been taken following the ruling passed by the Supreme Court on February 13, which ordered the dissolution of the CMJ University in Meghalaya, affirming the state government’s decision to shut down the institute in 2014 for allegedly defrauding thousands of students by giving them fake degree certificates.
The apex court had upheld the state’s order, dismissing the Meghalaya high court’s 2021 directive for a reconsideration of the dissolution.
