Meghalaya govt gets positive response from defence ministry over land for airport expansion: CM
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Wednesday informed that the defence ministry has given a positive response on the state government’s request for acquiring land for the expansion of the Umroi airport.
Speaking to reporters on his recent visit to New Delhi, Sangma said, “I met the defence minister and we had a detailed discussion on the airport land. As you are aware certain sections of the extended runway which is required for the expansion of the umroi airport (small acres of land) is under defence and we have had multiple meetings with the defence ministry and there has been a discussion on how we can go further details I will explain once things become clearer.”
“I have got a very positive response from him and he said that he will give full support in whatever way required because the expansion of the runway is very important because the commercial flights (A320 ) should land in Shillong at the earliest,” he said.
“We are hopeful that we will be able to start with the expansion of the runway soon and I am hopeful that within maximum 12 to 15 months time we would be able to see commercial flights landing directly from Delhi in Umroi airport, which would be a major game changer in terms of tourism for the state of Meghalaya,” Sangma added.
