Meghalaya govt is sincere to come up with solution on Sweeper’s Colony issue: Punjab team
SHILLONG: A five-member delegation from Punjab has expressed satisfaction on the measures taken by the state government to ensure safety of the residents of Sweeper’s Colony at Them Iew Mawlong even as they hope the latter would come out with a long lasting solution.
The delegation sent by Punjab chief minister, Amarinder Singh comprised of Minister for cooperation and jails, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, two MPs – Jasbir Singh Gill, and Ravneer Singh Bittu, and two MLAs – Kuldeep Singh Vaid, and Kulbir Singh Zira.
Their visit to the state was following the recent threat issued by the proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) on the issue related to the relocation of genuine settlers from the congested and unhygienic Them Iew Mawlong.
On Thursday, the delegation also sought the intervention of the home minister, James K Sangma to ensure safety and security of these settlers.
“We had a very good meeting and satisfied by the outcome of the meeting. The Meghalaya government is sincere to restore normalcy and to come out with a long lasting solution. We have faith in the Meghalaya government and the people of Meghalaya, who are very warm and gave all the love and affection,” Jasbir Singh Gill Dimpa told reporters.
The delegation extended an invitation to the home minister on behalf of the Punjab chief minister to visit Punjab.
“We want to say that all is well, and we hope that the solution comes up soon. We discussed only about long lasting solution as this issue goes into hibernation and then comes up within a year or two. This should be settled once and for all and we hope that the high level committee will come up with a feasible solution,” Dimpa said.
