Meghalaya Govt launching seed ball initiative through school students
As part of Meghalaya Environment Week celebrations, Meghalaya Forests and Environment Minister, James PK Sangma on Wednesday launched the symbolic “Seed-Ball Initiative and GIS Based Natural Resources Management Boundary Mapping” at Harding Theological College, Edenbari, near Tura in the presence of GHADC CEM, Albinush Marak, West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, Swapnil Tembe, Chief Conservator of Forests, PR Marak, the officials of MBMA and MBDA and other line departments, students and teachers of various schools in and around Tura and other dignitaries.
Launching the initiative on the day, James informed that events like this create mass awareness about environmental issues and said the events being organized under the environment week will see collective participation by community, number of schools, colleges, universities, village based institutions, Govt. departments, public representatives and other stake holders. To mark the week-long celebrations of Meghalaya Environment Week, 2022, the Govt. of Meghalaya is launching the seed ball initiative throughout the state through the students of different schools plus all the 46 C&RD Blocks, he added.
While speaking at length about the global warming, he also said that today’s program was a symbolic which will help in enhancing the green cover and urged the gathering to nurture and care for natural environment.
The CEM of GHADC, Albinush Marak, congratulated the stake holders and urged the people to make Garo Hills greener.
The Director of Centre of Excellence, Dr. Subhas Asutosh, while presenting the overview of the seed ball initiative, informed that the forest cover in the state is slightly declining and sought the cooperation of the people in making the state greener.
Others who spoke on the occasion included, Anchita Roy of Tura Public School and Ebriana Naomi Marak of Casarina Public School.
During the launching of the initiative, the chief guest also distributed the packets of seed balls to the representatives of different schools.
On the day, West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, Swapnil Tembe, delivered the welcome address while the Additional Director of MBDA, DB Gunanka, proposed the vote of thanks.
