Meghalaya Govt lifts ban on sale of imported fish
The state government has lifted the ban on the sale of imported fresh fish with effect from June 24.
A notification issued by the Commissioner of Food Safety RM Kurbah on June 24 said, “It is for information of all concerned that the prohibition of the storage, distribution and sale of imported fresh fish or crustaceans brought from outside the state vide order dated June 8, is hereby lifted with effect from June 24.”
On June 8, the state government had banned the sale of imported fresh fish for a period of 15 days, after 30 samples of fish were tested positive for ‘formalin’ which is an unpermitted preservative.
The earlier notification had said out of 40 samples of fish tested and reports received, 30 samples have been tested positive for formalin as per the analysis reports from the Assistant Food Analyst to the Government of Meghalaya vide report dated June 6, which is highly toxic and injurious to health.
