Meghalaya Govt mandates vehicle location tracking for public transport
The Meghalaya Transport Department has issued a notification mandating the installation of Vehicle Location Tracking Devices (VLTD) in public service vehicles and those with national permits, as per Rule 125H of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989.
The move aims to enhance safety and compliance with the AIS-140 standard set by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH).
The state government will implement its own data protocol and format for transmitting tracking data to the Command-and-Control Centre.
In the first phase, the following categories must install VLTDs by April 30, 2025:

- All Government owned Public Transport vehicles, such buses owned by Urban Affairs/Government Hospitals/Educational & Govt. Training Institution etc..
- Public transport vehicles owned by PSUs such as MTC, STEMS, and MUDA.
- All new vehicles manufactured on and from 01-01-2019 which comes under the purview of rule 125H of CMVR 1989.
The notification was issued by Sanjay Goyal, IAS, Commissioner & Secretary, Transport Department.
