Meghalaya govt to include meat as essential commodity
The state government is proposing to include meat as an essential commodity.
The decision was taken after public have expressed concern over the exorbitant hike on meat items during the national lockdown to combat against COVID-19.
“I have instructed the department to find out and if meat is not in the list of essential commodities, to come up with a proposal to amend the existing act to ensure all meat items are included,” Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Prestone Tynsong said.
Tynsong said the exercise will be completed very soon and necessary instruction will be given to all deputy commissioners.
The deputy CM said that he has also received reports about the increase in the prices of meat items which has affected consumers in the state.
“I also take this opportunity to appeal to all meat sellers to refrain from taking advantage of the present situation,” he said.
Asked, Tynsong said the department has also been asked to collect details of the prevailing rate of meat items in the market.
