Meghalaya Govt to incorporate UGC norms in the State University Act
The State Cabinet on Tuesday approved the Captain Williamson Sangma State University Amendment Bill in the form of an ordinance.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said the government has expanded the scope of the Captain Williamson Sangma State Technical University and into a full fledged state university.
“But while we did the amendments and after that there were concerns that were raised and after discussion with Governor and others and the education department, the amendments were being done to incorporate certain UGC norms that are there and hence the amendment was cleared in terms of an ordinance today to put in the UGC norms which will be applicable in the Captain Williamson Sangma State University Act,” he said.
He cited that the structure of the boards of governors, board of management and others of the university will be as prescribed by the UGC.
To a question, Sangma said that the government’s intention is to start the state university from the next academic year.
“And that is why we have been pushing this very fast because we want the CUET issue to be resolved also,” he added.
Informing that the main campus of the university will be in Tura, Sangma said, “That is the main campus of course and we want to ensure that the manpower and everything is in place in time so that we are able to start in the next academic year in terms of starting the administrative work that is there. Apart from that we have also unofficially discussed the expansion of the campus to different parts of the state and definitely that is on our agenda but those details are not there with me right now but we will be taking the expansion and extension for the campuses in different parts of the state.”
