Meghalaya Guv says peace, safety & security prerequisite for development
Governor Satya Pal Malik said peace, safety and security are prerequisite for development.
In his address on the first day of the state Assembly’s budget session on Friday, Malik said during 2020, the overall law and order situation in the state was peaceful.
He said national days were observed in a befitting manner despite the COVID-19 pandemic and all socio-cultural and religious festivals were celebrated with traditional fervot and gaiety.
Stating that there were a few agitations by NGOs on issues concerning the implementation of the Inner Line Permit and protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019, Malik said however, these agitations were effectively dealth with by the state government.
The governor further informed that the law and order situation along the Assam-Meghalaya inter-state border is by and large normal and issues were amicably resolved by the district administration and district police who are regularly in touch with their counterparts in Assam.
He said the state shares an international border of 444.8 kms with Bangladesh, out of which fencing has been erected over 329.7 kms.
“The state is committed to complete the balance border fencing work expeditiously,” the governor said as he also assured that the state government remains committed to effectively contain illegal migration, trans-border movement and activities of militants and anti-national elements.
