Meghalaya launched District Policy on Persons with Disabilities
Meghalaya Social Welfare Minister Kyrmen Shylla on Saturday launched the District Policy on Persons with Disabilities.
“The policy aims at achieving full realization of the rights and freedoms of differently abled persons, it also aims at providing and developing the mechanism and infrastructure required for differently abled people to achieve their full potential,” Shylla told a gathering in Khliehriat.
Deputy Commissioner East Jaintia Hills Districr informed the District Administration with the support of the Office of the District Social Welfare Officer, East Jaintia Hills District, Khliehriat is carrying out a census for people with disabilities in the entire District which is a door to door survey.
He also stated that the survey to identify Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) is conducted by the trained Community Base Rehabilitation Workers (CBRWs) and Multipurpose Rehabilitation Workers (MRWs) led by the District Social Welfare Officer.
He informed till date 122 villages have been completed, 872 numbers of PWDs have been identified, and with many villages yet to be covered more people with disabilities will be identified.
The Deputy Commissioner said that after the survey is completed, assessment camps for Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) will also be conducted in 10 locations of the District wherein UDID Card /Disability certificates will be provided to the disabled, CM Special Assistance Programme and Pension for the Disabled will also be facilitated in the Camp so that the PWDs will get their benefits.
On the District Policy on Persons with Disabilities, the Deputy Commissioner of East Jaintia Hills District said that the policy was formulated so that even when District Administration changes, the policy will be the guiding instrument and it remains a sustainable effort so that the benefits can be imparted to the PWDs in line with the policy.
