Meghalaya lost 32 years old nurse to rabies
In a tragic incident, Gracetyfull Marngar passed away at Civil Hospital Shillong on Monday after a two-month battle against rabies, a fatal viral disease.
Marngar, a 32-year-old nurse, was working as a Mid-Level Health Provider at Tynghor Health Sub Centre, West Khasi Hills District, when she contracted rabies after being bitten by stray puppies around eight weeks ago.
Confirming the incident on Tuesday, Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh informed that the medical practitioner was identified as Gracetyfull Marngar (32) from West Khasi Hills.
“Yesterday, we lost one of our MLHPs. She was bitten by a dog two months ago and, for some reason, did not take the anti-rabies vaccination,” she said.
Following the incident, the minister added, “I am very saddened and disturbed… We are now proposing to make the vaccine available even at the sub-centre level.”
Marngar was admitted to Civil Hospital Shillong a few weeks ago after developing symptoms of rabies. Despite the best efforts of the medical team, she could not be saved.
Marngar was the daughter of the late Speakwell Dkhar and Drella Marngar. She is survived by her husband Albert Syiemlieh and their one-year-old child. Her funeral will be held on Wednesday at the Catholic Church Cemetery in Laitkseh, West Khasi Hills.
