Meghalaya records highest voter turnout at 76.60% for LS polls
The state has recorded the highest number of voter turnout with 76.60 electorate came out to cast their vote for electing their new representatives to the two Lok Sabha seats of Shillong and Tura during the elections, which concluded yesterday.
“The total state voting percentage is at 76.60 percent,” chief electoral officer (CEO) Dr BDR Tiwari said on Saturday.
The polling percentage has increased by 5.23 percent compared to the last 2019 Lok Sabha polls at 71.37 per cent.
Over 22.26 lakh voters have exercised their franchise during the polling on Friday, of which 11.27 lakh are females, 10.99 lakh are males and 3 transgenders.
The voting percentage of female voters was registered at 78.62 per cent which is much higher than the male voters at 74.53 per cent, he said.
Giving a break up constituency wise, Dr Tiwari informed that the voter turnout in the Tura parliamentary constituency was at 81.37% while only 73.78% in the Shillong parliamentary constituency.
The assembly segment under the Shillong constituency which registered the highest turnout of voters was Ranikor in South West Khasi Hills with 80.55 per cent while lowest was in South Shillong with only 58.36 per cent.
As for the Tura constituency, Rajabala has recorded the highest number of voter turnout at 87.85 per cent while the lowest is South Tura with only 69.60 per cent. South Tura is the constituency represented by the chief minister Conrad K Sangma.
Meanwhile, the chief electoral officer informed that there are adequate number of forces to guard all the strong rooms in the 13 centres of the twelve district headquarters and Sohra civil sub division.
Meanwhile, counting will be held on June 4.
