Meghalaya recruited 2500 health care professionals over past six years

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said that the Government has recruited 2500 health care professionals over past six years to substantially addressed the challenge of human resources while allocating Rs 2176 crores including Rs1664 crores for Health and Family Welfare Department, which is almost a 13% increase from this year.
Sangma informed that the Government recruited 457 Medical and Health Officers, 274 Staff Nurses, 217 Auxiliary Nurse Midwives, and 393 Mid-Level Health Providers while presenting the budget. He also said that 916 construction and renovation works have been taken up compared to only 123 projects between 2013 to 2018 and 770 additional beds have increased across various health facilities.
Under the Chief Minister’s Safe Motherhood Scheme free transportation and accommodation at health facilities are provided to high-risk pregnant women, the Chief Minister said that he is allocating Rs.21 Crore for the continued implementation of the said Scheme as this has resulted in a heartening reduction of 50% in maternal deaths and 32% in infant deaths between 2020 and 2024.
Sangma said that the Meghalaya Medical Drugs and Services Limited (MMDSL) has procured 832 drugs, 12 endoscopy units, 24 X-ray machines, and installed ultrasound machines in over 30 facilities while adding that over 11,500 medical deliveries have been made to 244 facilities, including 566 by drone. He also said that Rs 197 Crore is allocated for procurement of drugs, equipment and other activities under MMDSL for 2025-26.
The Chief Minister informed that the Megha Health Insurance Scheme (MHIS) has increased from Rs 1.6 lakhs to Rs 5.3 lakhs, and registration has grown from 50% to 90% in the last decade while adding that the government is paying a premium of Rs. 2,576 for every registered household.
He also said that an amount of Rs. 180 Crore is allocated for the continued implementation of MHIS in 2025-26; out of this Rs 5 Crore is earmarked for financial assistance to citizens needing support beyond the standard MHIS coverage.
