Meghalaya the 1st state in NE Region to have curcumin extraction centre
The State of Meghalaya is the first states amongst the eight North Eastern States to have its own turmeric curcumin extraction centre in the region, where the curcumin’s content in turmeric can be known within ten minutes.
This was informed by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday at the inaugural function of the Lakadong Festival & Prime Hub at Laskein where Mowkaiaw MLA Nujorki Sungoh, Meghalaya Farmers Empowerment Commission Chairman KN Kumar Retd IAS, Agriculture & Farmers Welfare Commissioner & Secretary Dr. V Kumar D, IAS and DC West Jaintia Hills Garod L S N Dykes and large numbers of turmeric farmers and other attended.
Sangma said, “We no longer have to go to Kolkata to test the content of curcumin in the Lakadong Turmeric locally grown in Jaintia Hills region as now it can be tested in Laskein, West Jaintia Hills District and the result will be out in ten minutes.”
The Curcumin’s content Testing Centre has been set up in Laskein under the aegis of the Lakadong Turmeric Mission, which started four years back, Sangma exclaimed his happiness on the successful outcome of the Mission and also acknowledged the vision of Meghalaya Farmers Empowerment Commission Chairman K N Kumar for visualizing the Mission.
The Chief Minister said that the Govt want to take the Lakadong Turmeric Products further with better technology and standard, which will be acceptable globally in term of cleanliness, quality and the process. He also said that they need to work hard together to ensure the mission great and he also desired that the project to be replicated throughout the state and this is only the pilot project on mission mode presently if successful it going to be replicate for ginger for other product.
On the organizing of Lakadong Festival, the Chief Minister said that they named it Lakadong Festival not just Lakadong Conference because they feel the need to celebrate and be proud and attract people to see what they have done as how they have taken the product forward blessed by nature and convert it to source of revenue and income.
The Chief Minister distributed cheques to 15 Collective Marketing Centres under the Laskein C&RD Block amounting to Rs 1.5 crore in developing the value chain of Lakadong turmeric and for the impact they have made in the lives of farmers in Laskein block.
Earlier the Chief Minister inaugurated the Collective Marketing Centre (CMC) at Thadmuthlong and Shangpung Pohshnong beside the Prime Hub at Laskein and also handed over turmeric polishers and washers to the farmer’s group.
