Meghalaya to spent Rs.1900 crores on sports & for hosting 39th National Games in 2027

Jubilant over the hosting of the 39th National Games in Meghalaya, State Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma informed that in the next three years, close to Rs. 1,900 Crore is estimated to be spent on sports, including for hosting of the 39th National Games while adding that State won bids for hosting the mega National events in 2027 despite interest from larger States such as Chhattisgarh and Assam due to the dedication and preparedness of Meghalaya.
Sangma said that the 38th National Games saw Meghalaya achieve its joint highest medal tally in the Games’ history, bagging five medals while stating this is certainly a time for celebration and reaffirming their commitment to sports development during the presentation of the budget.
Informing that Meghalaya Sports Action Plan was recently released, the Chief Minister said, the Government has recently notified the Meghalaya Outstanding Sportspersons Direct Appointment Policy under which jobs are guaranteed for athletes winning medals at national and international level in International Olympics Committee recognized sports.
He also said that the Chief Minister’s Youth Exchange Programme shall be reimagined and scaled many-fold. Youth selected through talent identification programs will be sent for exposure visits and learning programs to different parts of the country and even internationally. He also added that State target 30,000 youth over the next three years, while allocating Rs.10 Crore for the programme.
Meanwhile, Sangma informed The State-owned OTT platform, Hello Meghalaya, offers financial incentives of up to Rs 5 lakh per film and Rs.18,000 per month for digital content creators. He also said that the Meghalaya Grassroot Music Program is a State supported initiative for musicians under which an amount of Rs.18 Crore has been disbursed to local artists and event managers while adding that “I am budgeting Rs 35 Crore in 2025-26”.
