Meghalaya: Two more dies of COVID-19, death toll rises to 114

Two more persons have died due to COVID-19 taking the death toll in the state to 114 on Wednesday.

66-year-old Mani Bhadra Chakma of Unakoti, Tripura and 55-year-old Pyrkhat Dkhar of Jowai, West Jaintia Hills district passed away at the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health & Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) hospital on November 28, Director of Health Services (MI) Dr Aman War said.

Chakma was tested positive for COVID-19 on being admitted at the hospital on November 19. “He however expired at 2.25 on November 28, due to respiratory failure with multi organ dysfunction syndrome with Covid pneumonia with hypertension with CKD with diabetes mellitus,” he said.

“Dkhar, who was also found COVID positive on November 3 before being admitted in the hospital on November 8, passed away at 10.52 pm (the same day). The cause of death was due to refractory septic shock with Covid pneumonia with CAD with hypothyroidism,” Dr War said.

Meanwhile, the state has also detected 79 new positive cases while 60 more persons were also declared recovered on Wednesday.

He said the new cases include 53 from East Khasi Hills district, 23 West Garo Hills district, 1 East Jaintia Hills district, 1 Ri Bhoi district and 1 West Jaintia Hills district. 

Of the 60 recovered patients, Dr War said 40 are from East Khasi Hills, 8 West Garo Hills, 5 South Garo Hills, 3 South West Garo Hills, 2 West Khasi Hills, 1 East Garo Hills and 1 Ri Bhoi.

So far, the state has detected a total of 11,954 COVID-19 cases out of which 686 are active cases, 11,154 recovered and 114 deaths.

Dr War said the fatality rate due to COVID-19 is 0.95 percent.

Of the total active cases, East Khasi Hills has 387 positive cases, West Garo Hills 153, Ri Bhoi 30, East Garo Hills 28, South Garo Hills 26, South West Garo Hills 21, West Jaintia Hills 19, West Khasi Hills 8, North Garo Hills 7, East Jaintia Hills 5 and South West Khasi Hills 2.

“Till date, swab samples of 2,45,177 persons have been tested of which 2,33,223 were found negative,” the senior medical official said.

There are 66,347 entrants from outside the state.
