Meghalaya urges Centre for continuing BAD program: Rakkam
Minister for Border Area Development Rakkam A Sangma on Monday said the state government has written to the Centre requesting the continuation of the Border Area Development programme in the state.
Addressing media persons, Sangma said that the BAD programme was in place for so many years. However, from 2021 onwards, this programme has been discontinued by the government of India.
“We have communicated and requested the government of India to reconsider (its decision) for continuation of the same programme,” he said.
According to him, the programme had really helped to build up the border infrastructure be it schools, hospitals, roads and bridges.
He said now the inter-state programme for construction of roads, community hall, school buildings etc is still continuing.
Asked, Sangma said, “It is a government of India programme. It was 90:10. It has been discontinued for different reasons. We have communicated to the government of India and we have requested for reconsideration of the programme.” He maintained that the scholarship for students from border areas will continue.
