Meghalaya witnesses slight flattening of COVID-19 curve
Of 8,000 deaths recorded this year, only 400 have died due to COVID-19 even as the health authorities have expressed confidence that the ongoing vaccination drive will provide necessary protection to the people of the state.
Addressing media persons on Thursday, Director of Health Services (MI) Dr Aman War said the number of deaths from January till May, this year is 8,000 plus and only 400 people have died due to COVID-19.
“Taking that into consideration and taking the vaccination status into consideration, we are very confident and hopeful to see that this vaccination drive which we have undertaken will provide the necessary protection to the people of the state,” he said.
According to him, the vaccination drive will also give the much-needed confidence to the health workers in combating against the COVID-19.
Stating that the positive cases are more or less constant at 400-500 at present, Dr War said, “What we can see now is that there is a slight flattening of the curve.”
Asked if the situation is conducive for the state government to open up economic activities, he however said economic activities have to go side by side with the fight against the pandemic.
Hailing the order passed by the Meghalaya High Court with regards to the vaccination issue, the Director said the court has clearly stated that those who spread rumours about the efficacy of the vaccination, severe action can be taken by the government.
“In this time of pandemic we don’t want to go into all those things but we have seen the malicious intent of certain sections wherein something which is good they have painted it to be bad and that I think the government will take a very strong action on this,” he said.
“As of now, as we progress and as we move on, we hope that although COVID will always be with us, we will be able to adapt to the situation and let life go on as usual,” Dr War added.
