Meghalaya’s Assembly building gets a 100-day extension; new target set for 2025 inauguration
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on December 4 announced that a 100-day extension has been granted for the completion of the New Meghalaya Assembly Building at Mawdiangdiang, Shillong.
“The engineers of the PWD department, contractors have met on multiple occasions to ensure that every minute detail is looked into. They have requested for an additional time as they don’t want to rush to complete the project. High Power Committee have agreed to allot additional time to complete the project,” the chief minister said.
The meeting discussed the progress of a construction and interior works which is currently underway, including the ongoing installation of the dome structure.
“With careful planning and design modifications, the dome’s weight has been reduced from 3,000 to 85 metric tons to enhance stability,” he added.
Speaker Thomas A. Sangma, who chaired the High-Power Committee meeting, confirmed that the new target for the completion of the building is set for before the Autumn Session of 2025. The delay has primarily been caused by the complex and unique design of the dome, which requires meticulous execution. A structural engineer is currently overseeing quality control to ensure precision at the site.
Despite facing challenges, Chief Minister Sangma assured that the project is progressing well and remains on track for completion by the newly set deadline. The new Meghalaya Assembly Building is envisioned as an iconic, functional space designed to provide ample room for legislators, staff, and political parties.
