Meghalaya’s first Bamboo Park to promote eco-friendly tourism
In a groundbreaking move towards sustainable development, James K Sangma, Chairman of the Meghalaya Industrial Development Corporation, laid the foundation stone for the state’s first Bamboo Park on December 14th. Located in Mawtnum Village, the innovative park aims to boost eco-friendly tourism and create employment opportunities for the local community, showcasing the region’s abundant bamboo resources.
The initiative, led by Village Headman Bah Badhok Nongmalieh, reflects the forward-thinking vision of the Mawtnum local leaders. The project includes various facilities like bamboo product manufacturing units, a training centre, and tourist accommodations, all built using locally sourced bamboo. The Village Dorbar Shnong has funded the project independently so far, hoping for future support from the state government.
The inauguration was attended by Dr. Celestine Lyngdoh, MLA Umsning, Additional Deputy Commissioner MB Tongper, DD Nongmalieh, Managing Director of MIDC Ltd, former MLA of Mawhati Bah Donbok Khymdeit, and former MDC of Umsning Bah Donkupar Sumer.
James K Sangma praised the environmental focus of the project and emphasized the importance of community collaboration. He assured that MIDC would strive to support the successful realization of the Ri Bhoi Bamboo Park, which aims to boost local tourism and benefit the residents, youth, and economy of the area.
Badhok Nongmalieh highlighted that the park would not only promote tourism but also provide employment opportunities and enhance the income of local farmers. The project aims to feature 10 to 11 structures, all constructed using bamboo from the district, showcasing the sustainable use of local resources.
The local leaders expressed hope that as the project progresses, they would receive the necessary support from the government to complete and realize the vision of the Ri Bhoi Bamboo Park.
