Meghalaya’s high-speed connection: Optical fibre to reach every block
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said that the government is in the process of laying optical fibre cables all the way to the block headquarters which will ensure that in every block there will be full speed optical fibre connectivity very soon.
He was speaking at the diamond jubilee celebration of teaching Science at Shillong College on Thursday, he said that the government will go to the major district headquarters and collaborate with many organizations to get the connectivity down to the grass-root level.
He said, “When the optical fibre connectivity goes down to the block levels, it opens up a huge opportunity for our people out here.”
Stressing on the importance of keeping abreast with the latest technological innovative ideas as well as maintaining the sustainability goals, he assured that there will be green jobs and science is going to play a crucial role.
The CM brought about a connection between economic development, the usage of Science and technology and involving the corporate sector with an aim to add commercial tag to an innovative idea.
IT Park
On the other hand, the CM said that the state government will soon construct the next phase of the IT Park which is a 5000-seater
“My target is to see that we can touch about 30,000 seats in the IT sector by getting investments from outside and be able to take advantage of the situation,” he said.
Observing that a digital world and economy will be seen in the near future, he said that IT and innovation is going to play a very crucial role in this aspect.
With concerns of sustainability seen the world over, the CM said that the other sector of focus will be sustainability and green economy.
“A lot of people, in the past, used to feel that the economy and ecology cannot move together but the fact is that it can go together. Hence, as we move toward a green economy, jobs will be created in the green economy and green jobs will be created,” he said.
Turning to the “growth” of the IT sector in Meghalaya, he said, “To come closer to home, if we look at the IT sector, we are slowly and steadily moving towards becoming a BPO destination, at least in the region we are one of the highest and in the coming years, hopefully, even nationally, we will be there at the map in terms of the IT sector.”
He claimed that the BPO sector is progressing in the state and it can move to the next level of technology implementation by being a technology provider in the long run.
He called upon educational institutes to start thinking in that line and work on improving technology.
Data centers
The Chief Minister informed that the state is in the process of putting up one of the largest data centers in the region.
“The process is on, we have received funds, we will be starting the process very soon. Everything is about the digital economy today and data centers are the backbones. We require manpower to maintain these data centers,” he said.
Submarine cables
He also informed that the submarine cables have landed in Chittagong and they will be taken to Guwahati and the proposed route is going to be Shillong.
Sangma said, “There is a high probability that very soon in collaboration the government of India, government of Bangladesh, government of Assam and the government of Meghalaya together will be able to get submarine cables land here in Shillong.”
