Meghalaya’s school boys to represent India in Paris
Junior Boys (U-17) from Myngken Christian HS School, Ri Bhoi District all set to participate in the 2nd edition of the Indo-French football tournament to be held in Paris, France by the Subroto Mukherjee Sports Education Society.
Congratulating the team, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma said, “I have always had faith in the spirit and passion of our Youth. The boys of Myngken Christian H.S. School have shown the nation a glimpse of this passion and I am happy to see them get to represent India in the City of the recently concluded Olympics, no less! I hope to see them grow from strength to strength, and see them grow into role models for others to follow!”
The Myngken Christian HS School were the runners up in the 63rd edition of Subroto Cup International Football Tournament that recently concluded in Bengaluru. The Subroto Mukherjee Sports Education Society were impressed with the performances of the team, which prompted their invitation to be a part of the tournament.
Sports and Youth Affairs Minister, Shakliar Warjri said, “The players have shown their athletic prowess in the recently concluded 63rd edition of Subroto Cup. It is a matter of pride for the state to see these players perform in an international arena and represent the country. We wish them all the very best and we are here to support them in whatever way they need.”
The event comes at a high point for Meghalaya Football, where the state U-17 boys team has not only won gold at this year’s Khelo India Youth Games in Tamil Nadu, but also recently co-hosted the prestigious Durand Cup, where local team Shillong Lajong FC also made it to the semi-finals of the tournament.
The 2nd edition of the Indo-French Football Tournament is scheduled to be held at Paris, France from November 25 to 30, 2024. All relevant expenses shall be borne by the Department in this regard. The touring team shall comprise of 16 players (two goalkeepers), one coach and one manager, as well as one representative from the state.
Being given the best of foundations from the grassroots level, it is also to be recalled that the Under-15 players from Nongjri Presbyterian Secondary School won the International Subroto Cup 2024 with a 3-0 score against Uttar Pradesh in August.
