Metbah Lyngdoh elected as new PP leader of UDP
SHILLONG: Three-time legislator of Mairang constituency and cabinet minister Metbah Lyngdoh was elected as the new parliamentary party leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP), which is the main ally of the NPP-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government.
This was after the recent demise of former Assembly Speaker Dr Donkupar Roy, who was the president of the UDP for nearly two decades. His passing away has reduced the strength of UDP to 6 MLAs.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the party MLAs held at the Lyngdoh’s residence here on Monday. It was also attended by the two independent MLAs – SK Sunn and Samuel Sangma, who are the associate members of the party.
After the meeting, UDP leader and cabinet minister Lahkmen Rymbui said that the MLAs of the party have unanimously resolved to elect Metbah Lyngdoh as the leader.
Lyngdoh was also elected as the new chairman of the Regional Democratic Alliance (RDA) formed between the UDP and the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP), which is having two MLAs in the 60-member House.
