Midday meal workers serve 10-day ultimatum for Govt to enhance their honorarium
Midday meal workers on Monday threatened to hit the streets if the state government fails to enhance their monthly honorarium within 10 days.
The decision was taken at a meeting convened by the All Jaintia Mid Day Meal Workers’ Union (AJMDWU) and the All Meghalaya Midday Meal workers (AMMMW) held at Madan Iewrynghep (Fire brigade), here.
The midday meal workers have been demanding the government to enhance the state’s share on monthly honorarium to Rs 2,000 from Rs 100 and to release their three months pending honorarium.
Addressing the meeting, advisor of the Union KL Pariat said as per information received, the government is likely to take up their demand in the next cabinet meeting which will be held very soon.
“However, we have decided to give the government till November 10, to take up our demand failing which we will be compelled to hit the streets of Shillong,” Pariat said.
He said the midday meal workers in the state are being paid Rs 100 per month as honorarium from the state’s share since 2002.
“We have been demanding enhancement of the amount from time to time but it has fallen on deaf ears,” he added.
Pariat said the government should also release the pending honorarium for July, August and September this year.
