MJACCV calls off indefinite strike after reduction in petrol, diesel prices
The commercial vehicle operators on Tuesday called off their indefinite strike following the state government’s decision to reduce the petrol and diesel prices by Rs 7.
The indefinite strike was called under the banner of the Meghalaya Joint Action Committee of Commercial Vehicles (MJACCV) for the past 14 days as a mark of protest against fuel price hike in the state.
“We have decided to call off the strike after seeing that the state government under the leadership of the chief minister Conrad K Sangma has taken initiative to reduce the prices of fuel in the state,” member of the JAC, Marbud Dkhar said.
Dkhar, also the president of the Mawlai People Grievances Forum (MPGF), said that the response by the state government was a big achievement for the JAC.
“We welcome the decision of the government but at the same time we also make it clear that we want this reduction to remain and not withdrawn within few days time,” he said.
Expressing gratefulness to the public for their support, Dkhar also admitted that the strike has affected the livelihood of the taxi and tourist drivers, daily wage earners as well as students.
On the demand for 50 percent reduction in the vehicle taxes for the period during the COVID-19 lockdown last year, Dkhar said that the JAC would soon conduct a follow up with the state government.
According to him, the state government should understand the fact that the income of the commercial vehicles were affected to a great extent due to the lockdown and that some relief should also be given to them.
