MLA seeks action to prevent Khyndailad from becoming a ‘red light area’
North Shillong legislator Adelbert Nongrum has expressed concern that Khyndailad area may turn into a ‘red-light area’.
He also demanded the state government to act on the issue to ensure that Meghalaya is not known as a capital state that deal with prostitution.
This came when the Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui said the government is not aware that Khyndailad has become a pick-up point of sex workers while replying in the Assembly on Wednesday.
“…to the best of our knowledge Khyndailad is not a pick up point for sex workers but is a pick up for passengers (by public transports),” he said.
Asking the minister not to take the issue as a joke since it deals with the precious lives of the youth and may cause spread of HIV/AIDS, Nongrum requested Rymbui to spare his time to take a round at Khyndailad area.
“Please spare your time at 10 pm, I will take you for a round (at Khyndailad area) and see what is the truth,” he said.
Noting down the concern of the member, Rymbui informed that due to this reason, the government has set up an anti-human trafficking unit to look into the matter and prevent it at any particular time.
He also urged the MLA to inform such activities to the local thana for police to take action as per law.
Earlier when East Shillong legislator Ampareen Lyngdoh supporting the demand of Nongrum for investigation into the matter, the minister said that police have conducted raids on this regard.
He also assured that the police department is alive of the issue and does not want such things to happen in the society.
