MLA seeks global recognition for Meghalaya’s whistling village
BJP legislator from South Shillong, Sanbor Shullai has sought global recognition for Kongthong village.
Kongthong, also known as whistling village, is located 56 kms away from Shillong, the state capital and district headquarters of East Khasi Hills district.
According to 2011 census, there are 567 people residing in the village.
During his official visit to New Delhi, Shullai met and requested Prof JS Rajput, India’s representative to the executive board of the UNESCO for his support to accord intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO to Kongthong village.
The MLA has also requested Prof Rajput to visit Kongthong village soon so that the village can get global attention.
Prof Rajput has assured to take up the matter with the UNESCO through the Ministry of Cultural Affairs.
In this regard Shullai also met MP Rajya Sabha Rakesh Sinha at his residence in New Delhi and thanked for adopting Kongthong village.
The MP has assured all possible help to Kongthong village to ensure sustainable livelihood programme is provided for self employment which will not affect the cultural heritage.
The MP also said that rest of the country should learn from Northeast regarding secularism and giving equal opportunity to female gender.
Shullai said that he has invited both MP Rakesh Sinha and Prof JS Rajput to Kongthong for global recognition.
