MLCU launches the book “The Mystery of the Cave”
“The Mystery of the Cave,” authored by Dr. Glenn C Kharkongor and translated into Khasi by Patricia Mukhim with illustration by Careen J Langstieh (Associate Professor of Practice, Community Centre for Arts, Craft and Culture, MLCU) was recently launched at Mawmluh, a place that served as the inspiration for the story.
The launch event, held during the Shillong Literary Festival 2023, saw the presence of dignitaries such as Patricia Mukhim, Careen Langstieh, and community leaders.
The program, hosted by Dr. Iadonlang Tynsong, Additional Registrar, MLCU included speeches highlighting the significance of the book, its relation to the cave in Mawmluh, and the importance of environmental education.
Teachers and students from Ram Krishna Mission Higer Secondary School, Nabon Sawian
Memorial Presbyterian Secondary School and Roban Sing Memorial Lower Primary School
attended the program which was hosted by Dr Iadonlang Tyngsong.
During her speech, Patricia Mukhim shared that the book’s concept stemmed from the fascinating cave at Mawmluh, noting how the stalagmite within it aided in identifying the onset of the Meghalayan Age. She described the book as a blend of fictional exploration intertwined with factual information about the cave’s elements and species, complemented by illustrations to aid student comprehension. Mukhim urged students to embark on cave explorations guided by teachers and local experts, emphasizing the importance of understanding and preserving their environment. She highlighted the disparity in knowledge between locals and outside visitors, stressing the need for community-driven environmental education to foster respect for their surroundings and deter littering
A storytelling session by Careen J Langstieh engaged the audience, followed by expressions of gratitude from Mr. P. Kharwanlang on behalf of the community. The event concluded with the distribution of the book to teachers and community members, emphasizing its role in inspiring children to appreciate caves and the environment.
