MLCU launches The Tea Planter by Brian D Kharpran Daly
Martin Luther Christian University (MLCU) Press, in collaboration with the School of Languages and Cultural Communication (SLCC), hosted the launch of The Tea Planter by author Brian D Kharpran Daly at the Umsawli campus on Wednesday.
The event began with a welcome address by Evarisha Mercy Syiem, Dean of SLCC, who spoke on the significance of the book. Idaaijinghun Nangsiej presented a welcome song to set the tone for the occasion.

Brian D Kharpran Daly introduced his novel, explaining that it was inspired by old notes from his father’s hunting days. While he has authored several books, he described this one as unique, blending fact with fiction. The novel explores themes of tiger hunting in Assam, superstitions surrounding tiger whiskers, isolation in tea gardens, and life in Ireland. It ends with a reflective poem.
The book was officially launched by Patricia Mukhim, editor of The Shillong Times and chief guest for the event. She praised the book’s depth and storytelling, noting the surprise shift from Brian’s usual focus on caves to a tale rich in love, death, and intrigue. She also urged students to write and share their experiences.
MLCU Chancellor Glenn Kharkongor recalled his long-standing friendship with Brian and their shared passion for books and cave exploration. He highlighted Brian’s role in putting Meghalaya on the map through his speleological work and encouraged attendees to visit caves themselves.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks from Clarissa Jane Rajee, assistant professor at SLCC. An interactive session followed, where the author responded to questions and shared insights into his writing process.
The event drew enthusiastic participation from students, faculty, and literary enthusiasts, marking a memorable celebration of literature.
