Momentum builds for 6th Meghalaya Games: Over 4,000 athletes set to compete in Jowai-Wahiajer
Excitement is mounting as Jowai prepares to host the 6th Meghalaya Games, which will see over 4,000 athletes and 450 technical officials converge for the prestigious event from January 20 to January 25, 2025.
The organizing committee, along with state-level committee heads, conducted a detailed site inspection on December 17, starting at Wahiajer Sports Complex, followed by a review meeting at the Division of Soil and Water Conservation in Jowai, West Jaintia Hills District.
Working President of the Meghalaya State Olympic Association, John F. Kharshïing, emphasized the significance of the games as a platform for youth to showcase their talent and the role of sports in building a vibrant community.
The opening ceremony, coinciding with Meghalaya Day on January 21, will take place at Wahiajer Stadium in the evening and promises a grand celebration of sports and culture. The closing ceremony will be held on January 25 at Kiang Nangbah Stadium in Jowai. Kharshïing expressed confidence in the district’s ability to deliver a memorable event, thanks to robust community cooperation and government support.
The site inspection saw participation from key officials, including Director of Sports Dikki D Shira, Organizing Secretary Finely Pariat, Assistant Directors PB War Nongbri and Khroobok Passah, and Additional Deputy Commissioner DV Lyngdoh. Fifteen committees were actively involved, overseeing critical areas such as medical services, media coordination, IT communication, venue development, catering, volunteer management, and security.
Kharshïing lauded the infrastructural developments in Jowai, such as improved roads, schools, and community assets, which will leave a lasting legacy. He also highlighted contributions from local Dorbar Chnongs and thanked Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar and MLA Wailadmiki Shylla for facilitating the use of community halls for the event.
Infrastructure for the games includes the ongoing construction of a 25-meter swimming pool at Kiang Nangbah Government College, though swimming events will temporarily be held in Shillong. Golf will be hosted by Assam Rifles, while the 10-meter indoor shooting competition will occur at Chilliangraij Dorbar Hall due to construction delays at Khliehtyrshi.
Organizing Secretary Finely Pariat urged public support for the games, emphasizing their transformative impact on local sports infrastructure. “This event brings significant benefits, not only for sports but for schools and localities. The introduction of facilities like boxing rings and badminton courts is a game-changer for Jowai,” he said.
With just over a month to go, preparations are on track. The organizing committee plans a final review by the end of December to ensure the success of the 6th Meghalaya Games, which promises to be a milestone for Meghalaya’s sporting future.
