More colleges to be covered under People’s College Scheme: CM
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma today said that colleges should be prepared to handle the increase in the number of youth seeking higher education in the State.
The Chief Minister was addressing a group of academicians at a programme for handing over of sanctioned order to Tura Christian College under the Government’s People’s College Grant in aid Scheme.
‘In the next two years we will have almost 15 to 18 percent increase in the college going population but the number of seats is not increasing at the same rate’, he opined.
The Chief Minister said that despite the many challenges being faced in the education sector the Government stands committed in its endeavour to ensure that the youth of the State do not miss out on opportunities for higher education.
The Chief Minister said that the Government is in the process of chalking out plans for more colleges to be brought under the People’s College Grant in aid scheme.
‘We are in the process of working out financials to see if we can expand these schemes to include more colleges in the Districts, Sub-Divisions and blocks because we strongly feel that it is required at the grassroot level’, he said.
Tura Christian College is one of nine community colleges in the State that has received benefits of Government sanctioned posts for teaching and non-teaching staff under People’s College Grant in aid scheme.
