MP Rajya Sabha inaugurates 43rd session of NEIHA hosted by Thomas Jones Synod College in Jowai
The 43rd Session of the North-East India History Association (NEIHA) was inaugurated by Dr. WR. Kharlukhi, MP Rajya Sabha, as the chief guest at Thomas Jones Synod College in Jowai.
The conference, running from November 5 to 7, has attracted approximately 200 delegates from across the region and is supported by the Chief Minister’s Special Grant.
The event was chaired by Wandy EH. Lamin, Vice Principal of Thomas Jones Synod College. During the opening session, Dr. Kharlukhi recalled the history of Kiang Nangbah, a revered figure from the Khat-Ar Dolloi community, whose life was taken by the British government through execution on December 30, 1862, in Iawmusiang. He conveyed the Chief Minister’s regrets for being unable to attend due to a bye-election in Gambegre while reaffirming support for NEIHA’s initiatives.
Also present were Chief Executive Member of JHADC Ma Thombor Shiwat, former NEIHA President Prof. JL. Dawar, new President Prof. Salam Irene, Principal of Thomas Jones Synod College Dr. I. Dkhar, retired NEHU professor J.B. Bhattacharjee, and other prominent scholars and educators from Jowai.
General Secretary of NEIHA, Amena N Passah, noted that the association was established in 1979 to promote research and dialogue on the history of the eastern region and related sites. She explained that NEIHA holds annual conferences at various universities and colleges, producing scholarly works that address the region’s challenges, development, and cultural heritage.
Newly elected President Prof. Salam Irene presented on “The Impact of Colonialism on the Religion, Faith, and Culture of the Tribals of Manipur,” exploring the effects of foreign rule on indigenous beliefs and practices.
The conference also featured the launch of two significant publications: Betel Culture Amidst the Valley in Northeast India by Dr. Iadeishisha Ladia and A Concise History of The Freedom Movement of India and Assam—With Special Reference to Martyr Kushal Konwar by Sristidhar Dutta. Additionally, the unveiling of the scarves of the Jaintia people showcased traditional weaving techniques.
Local Secretary Kong Annarica Thma expressed gratitude to all participants and contributors for their engagement in the conference.
