MTD oppose KHADC’s move to set up new market
The Mawlai Town Dorbar on Tuesday expressed strong opposition against the proposed setting up of a new market at Mawlai Mawroh as it may affect the sources of water supply around the area.
This came after a joint inspection was conducted between the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), district administration and Hima Mylliem recently.
In a letter to the KHADC chief Titos Chyne, MTD president SD Khongwir said, “We oppose this move if it is going to affect the sources of drinking water supply of Mawlai people.”
He said when Mawlai got its first water supply scheme commissioned, its population then was only less than 20,000. “However, now the population of Mawlai has increased to over 50,000. Therefore, if the water sources are to be disturbed, supply of drinking water will no doubt be affected,” Khongwir added.
Moreover, the president said that the matter has also come as surprise because even the headman of Mawlai Mawroh was never made aware about the proposal of the Council.
On the other hand, Khongwir said that the MTD fully support the intention of the Council to decongest the Iewduh market.
