Mukul accuses Meghalaya CM of telling “lies”
Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma on Saturday accused the Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma of offending the people of the state by telling lies over the border issue.
“He (Conrad) is offending the people of the state by telling lies. It is not an insult to Dr Mukul but to the people of the state,” Mukul told reporters.
He said the state government as per the MoU signed with Assam has given Khanapara, Ganesguri and Maikhuli to the counterpart.
Stating that whatever documentations submitted to the Assam government (in 2011) was to claim and get back and ensure all the areas of difference remain with Meghalaya and not to divide, Mukul said, “They say give and take but whose land they wanted to give?”
“Now chief minister is saying we have gone beyond the (areas under) dispute, that means he has not understood. He has not understood the complexity associated with this contentious issue…I had a fear and I have expressed my fear a number of times even in the house, didn’t they laugh at me.”
Mukul said that Assam never came forward after getting the documentation relating to the claims over the 12 areas of difference in 2011.
“I am of the opinion that Assam knew that if they would have been sitting across the table with Dr Mukul Sangma at the helm of affairs, I will not be surrendering the land to Assam. I repeat I will not be surrendering the land to Assam, they knew it, that’s why they want to complete it when Conrad Sangma is in there,” he alleged.
“They were in a hurry, how many meetings did Conrad Sangma had with counterpart, how many meetings, even before inking the agreement and that also during the holidays. You see, December, January how many people are actually also engaged in many other our social cultural and religious activities, how much time he (CM) has been able to really give, to really understand the complexities that are associated with this contentious issue,” Mukul asked.
Stating that Malchapara, Malang Salbari, Malangkhona are well within Meghalaya, the leader of opposition said they were not part of the disputed land.
“(But) why has he (CM) given it… Maikhuli why he has divided it…who has given him the authority to divide 50/50,” he said.
Mukul said he has warned many times and have asked the state government to hold on and not sign the MoU but “they laughed at me because they don’t understand”.
Reacting to an allegation, the former chief minister said that Dr Mukul cannot create new map of the state.
“The state government of Meghalaya cannot create a new map, which is not inconsistent with actual revenue records, that is precisely the reason why I say that every claim is based on this documentation supported by the revenue documents notified from time to time not just one notification. Therefore, these maps are based on whatever land belongs to your Hima Nonglang, now Hima Nonglang map I cannot change, but why Hima land is given to Assam, that is the question, that is what he should reply not beat around the bush,” he said.
“He said Dr. Mukul has signed. Have you seen my signature there? Because he knows, okay I can play with that population of the Garo Hills and Meghalaya that means he’s offending the people of the state by telling lies,” Mukul stated.
