Mukul condemn Govt’s decision to make Hindi a compulsory subject
Leader of Opposition and former Chief Minister Mukul Sangma has condemned the government’s attempt to forcefully impose Hindi as a compulsory subject up to class X in Meghalaya and other North eastern states, without taking the overall sentiments of the people into account.
Sangma said he was perturbed by the fact that when the Union Home Minister Amit Shah says that the eight NE states have agreed to make Hindi as a compulsory subject that means he has taken them on board.
“And the people who are in the helm of affairs of governance have already agreed to proceed with this proposed imposition – this is something which I condemned,” he told reporters on Wednesday.

Stating that the overall sentiment of the people has not been taken, Mukul said it is something which is not new that the imposition to learn a language has always been opposed.
“Therefore keeping in mind this overall usual reaction from people I think they should have articulated it properly what is likely going to be the view of the people as I said the government only represent people, they should have articulated what is likely the feeling of the people of the state by the respective governments which has not happened,” he said.
Referring to the statement of the Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma for trying to defend the government’s decision by saying one should learn Hindi, Mukul said, “But who is stopping people from learning Hindi nobody is stopping anybody from learning other languages whether it is German or French I mean language always come in handy so people will find a way to learn other languages.”
