Mukul slams MDA govt over NEIGRIHMS issue
SHILLONG: Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma on Tuesday slammed the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government for its failure to intervene into the issue related to the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS).
He was reacting to the recent statement made by the chief minister Conrad K Sangma that there is not much interference from the state government into the alleged business syndicate between the Cardiology department and a private pharmacy as NEIGRIHMS is directly under the jurisdiction of the Central government.
“That means he (CM) is shrugging off his responsibilities. I pity him. If that is an understanding of the CM then God save Meghalaya,” Mukul told reporters here.
Asking the state government to take strong cognizance of the issue, he said, “The purpose of the medical college is not a ground created for them to come and have their infightings and washed their dirty linens in public. Therefore, the government of the day should take up the matter with the Government of India and ensure that corrective measures are done without further delay.”
He said appropriate action should be taken as per law and see that NEIGRIHMS does not become an institution where all kinds of unexpected activities are happening.
“So clear it once for all and clean the institution once for all and that is the only time when you see NEIGRIHMS responding to its true call of duty as a referral centre. It is a centre of excellence and it is an institution where we all should take pride. The way things are going on it is not an institution where one can take pride of with the kind of affairs that is being reported,” he said.
The leader of opposition also asserted that medical institutions must be taken care of properly and they must not be subjected to this kind of situation where they become subject matter of gossip.
