Mukul, TMC becoming irrelevant in Khasi-Jaintia region, says Pala
Opposition Congress chief and former Shillong MP Vincent H Pala has alleged that the former chief minister Mukul Sangma and his party – the All-India Trinamool Congress (or TMC) have become “irrelevant” in the politics of the Khasi and Jaintia Hills region.
According to him, the Congress is really not worried but leaves it to Mukul Sangma on whether to come back to the grand old party or not.
Pala’s stand came as a reaction to the recent allegation of Mukul Sangma that there is no question of him going back to the Congress because it is working with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) backed National People’s Party (NPP)-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government.
“We are not worried whether he (Mukul) will come back or not. We have no issues whether he comes back or not. It is up to him,” Pala said.
Stating that the Congress had won the Tura parliamentary seat in Garo Hills without Mukul Sangma, the former Shillong MP said, “Hopefully in Khasi and Jaintia Hills also this time, we should do well without Mukul. Let’s hope also in the future we can do better.”
Alleging that Mukul and TMC has become irrelevant in the Khasi and Jaintia Hills region, Pala said, “ Mukul doesn’t even have candidates for the upcoming ADC polls. This shows that the TMC is becoming irrelevant in the politics of Khasi and Jaintia Hills as its people have all joined the Congress. So that means Mukul has become irrelevant in the Khasi and Jaintia Hills region.”
In an interaction with journalists on December 4, Mukul Sangma had maintained by saying, “You are asking me when I will go back to Congress? But Congress is also with them. Is it not a fact? Isn’t Congress with the NPP?” You go to the district council. So you are talking about Congress in Meghalaya, which is completely directionless. If they have proper direction or sense of direction then they would know whether they should associate with NPP or not.
They speak something in the public domain but behind the scenes they are hand in glove.”
“So Dr Mukul Sangma is putting an end to this speculation because I cannot dilute my focus, my determination to serve the people, to build the state in a manner which commensurate with the dream and aspiration of the people,” he had added.
